MONROEVILLE, PA - George Washington, the number 10-seed, was defeated by No. 7 Charlotte in the opening round of the 2008 Women's Tennis Atlantic 10 Championship, early Friday morning at Club 4 Life in Monroeville, PA. The Colonials will face one of the following four teams in the Consolation Bracket on Sat., Apr. 19, at 3:30 p.m.: #3 Richmond, #6 Rhode Island, #11 Dayton or #14 La Salle. The winner of that match will earn a tie for ninth place in the A-10 tournament.
In Friday's first-round match, Charlotte took the doubles point as they swept all three matches to claim an early 1-0 advantage.
In the singles portion of the match, the 49ers won three of the four matches that were completed to claim the victory, 4-1. GW's was earned by freshman Nadia Demidenko, in the No. 1 flight (6-2) after her opponent, Ana Spivakovsky, was forced to retire.
Sophomore Verena Knoedler was in the third and deciding set in the No. 4 flight when the match was called (1-6, 6-2, 1-4).
In the morning's other early match, No. 8 St. Louis cruised past No. 9 Fordham, 4-0.
